What Is Hypnotherapy — And How Is It Different from Hypnosis?
Hypnosis and hypnotherapy are often used interchangeably, but they’re not the same. If you’ve ever wondered what happens in a hypnotherapy session — or whether it’s just like stage hypnosis — this article is for you.
Hypnosis is a natural and focused state of mind where the brain shifts into a low-frequency brainwave, especially Theta, which allows for deeper access to the subconscious mind. In our daily lives, we pass through different brainwave states. These are measurable frequencies that reflect how active or relaxed our brain is.
There are 5 states of brain wave, being 1 of them divided in 3 levels.
We have :
BETA – Active thinking : it’s a state of frequencies where we rationalize, plan, and analyze problems in our daily life. This one frequency divides into 3 states:
- Low Beta (calm focus)
- Medium Beta (engaged problem-solving)
- High Beta (stress and survival mode)
From all Beta frequencies, high Beta,if it becomes a constant in a person’s life, it is a dangerous state of mind for the brain to be in. Since in this state, the mind is a surviving mode, which ends up affecting the body, making the body ill and in disharmony.
The other frequencies are :
ALPHA- Relaxed awareness: it is also a rational, critical thinking, but in a very low tone. This is a state where we process and reflect on what we have been learning, seeing, and engaging around us. This state of mind allows us to experience and consolidate information. Think of it as peaceful alertness.
Theta -The gateway to the subconscious: This is the state most used in hypnotherapy. It is a brain wave that allows suggestions. This brain wave allows the client to have access to his unconscious mind while remaining awake. This translates to the client physically as the body being asleep while the mind is awake. A person can easily enter into this state of mind in their daily life, like driving a car, zoning out, meditating deeply, or just before falling asleep or waking up.
Delta -Deep sleep: known as the profound sleep by humans. Delta is the state of unconscious, dreamless sleep. It’s the slowest brainwave state and essential for physical healing.
And last but not least, we have Gamma.
Gamma – Expanded awareness : Gamma is associated with high-level cognition, compassion, altruism, and peak consciousness. It’s a state of spiritual connection and profound emotional depth.
So, what is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic use of hypnosis in a structured, therapeutic process guided by a trained professional designed to uncover emotional, behavioral, or psychological challenges. As the client is set on the theta brain wave, the therapist has access to the unconscious mind, and they explore together core memories, limiting beliefs, and emotional patterns. The goal is to uncover the root cause of an issue and begin the process of reframing and healing traumas and beliefs.
Hypnotherapy is the healing journey guided within that state.
What Can Hypnotherapy (RTT) Help With?
Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) is a powerful therapeutic approach that helps identify and resolve the root causes behind emotional and behavioral challenges. It can be highly effective for a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and chronic stress.
Many clients also turn to RTT for support in overcoming addictions such as smoking or unhealthy eating habits, as well as managing weight and building healthier relationships with food and body image. Whether you’re struggling with negative thought patterns, emotional blocks, or habits you can’t seem to break, RTT offers deep and lasting change by rewiring the subconscious mind.
Will I lose control during Hypnosis?
No. As mentioned before, Hypnosis is nothing but a profound relaxation. The client in a hypnotic state can get out of it whenever they feel like it. The therapist has no control over your mind or thoughts. The therapist’s job is to guide and help you, as you regress throughout important memories and feelings.
It’s not about losing control — it’s about gaining insight and empowerment.
